Dr. iur. Dr. phil. Marcel Lötscher

Marcel Lötscher is the Director of the Swiss Institute for Digital Finance. He studied law at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and at the University of Bern. Before his studies, he completed a commercial banking apprenticeship at a major Swiss bank (today UBS) with distinction. He is admitted to the bar in the Canton of Lucerne. He is a trained mediator. He holds the diplomas Swiss Fund Officer FA/IAF and International Fund Officer FA.
Parallel to his career, he wrote two doctoral theses. He wrote his Dr. iur. thesis at the Private University in the Principality of Liechtenstein (UFL). It examines the qualified-investor declaration of wealthy private individuals in collective investment law, in a comparative perspective (cum laude). He wrote his Dr. phil. thesis at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. It examines the principles of Catholic investment: ethical and sustainable investment principles between religion and economics (magna cum laude). He holds an Executive LL.M. in company, foundation and trust law from the University of Liechtenstein and an MBA in General Management Competences from Danube University Krems (with distinction). He is a graduate of the VR-CAS HSG as a Certified Director for Board Effectiveness.
From 2012 to 2022, he worked at the Financial Market Authority (FMA) Liechtenstein. He was Head of the Asset Management and Markets Division and a member of the Executive Board. His division supervised asset managers, funds and their management companies. It approved bond prospectuses and was responsible for market-related supervisory matters. For more than ten years, he represented the FMA in international expert bodies. These include the ESMA Board of Supervisors and the European Regional Committee of IOSCO. They also include the IOSCO Expert Group on FinTech (ICO/STO) and the Member States Expert Group on Sustainable Finance of the European Commission. Before that, he worked for the Plenum Group (Plenum Holdings AG, Zug, and Plenum Securities AG, Zurich). He was COO, Group Legal Counsel and a member of group management. From 2022 to 2023, he was Head of Regulatory Strategy at FTX Europe AG.
Since 2023, he is Managing Director and member of the Board of LAWCONSULT AG, Baar (corporate and legal advisory). He is also responsible for the investment company PRIVATINVEST AG. He gives lectures and seminars on financial market law, in particular on FinTech and sustainable finance. He publishes regularly on these topics.
